Priority Campaigns

Welcome to NUS Scotland’s Priority Campaigns for this year, 2005–06.

This document sets out the key work that NUS Scotland will take forward in the year ahead – the different issues that our campaigning and lobbying will focus on, and some of the events, materials and resources we will provide for your students’ association.

We have developed three Priority Campaigns this year – each focussing on a different stream of issues, which together, aim to deliver real improvements for the more than 500,000 students we represent. Taking Education Forward focuses on students funding issues, and crucially on ensuring that Scotland stays top-up fee free, as well as on a raft of other education policy issues to demand an accessible Scottish tertiary education sector that is truly responsive to the needs and wishes of students. Taking Students’ Associations Forward aims to further build and support a Scottish students’ movement with empowered, active students, well-developed and resourced students’ associations and powerful activity that is channeled effectively into making change. Finally, Taking Equality Forward recognises that students have always had a central role in working for equality – locally, nationally and globally – whether this is in education, in the workplace, or in society, and the campaign will both lead on, and support this work in a number of new areas.

Our Priority Campaigns were developed by the Scottish Executive Committee from policy and mandates passed at NUS Scotland Council and Conference, as well as with regard to relevant current and emerging issues. In addition to these Priority Campaigns, we will be working on many other issues affecting students throughout the year. Do feel free to contact us if you would like additional information on any of the issues covered in this document.
