Join the Babyshambles, Roll Deep and more for Love Music, Hate Racism 08

Lethal Bizzle

Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) will be staging its biggest carnival to date, in east London's Victoria Park, on 27 April 2008 - and you can be part of the team that makes it happen. The event organisers are looking for regional coordinators, university promoters and volunteers for the day itself.

The event aims to be the organiser's biggest festival so far - following on from last year's event in Trafalgar Square which drew around 50,000 people.

LMHR 08 will celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the iconic Rock Against Racism event that took place in the very same park in 1978 and attracted more than 80,000 people. That event played a pivotal role in the fight against racism in the UK, and LMHR hope to do the same again in 2008.

This is also an important year for the festival, with the event encouraging people to use their vote against the fascist British National Party in the forthcoming Greater London Assembly and local council elections.

The Carnival is supported by NUS - and, like all LMHR events, will consist of a vibrant and mixed music policy across three stages, with everything from dubstep to bhangra, indie to grime and much more. Artists already confirmed include Baby Shambles, The Paddingtons, Roll Deep, Fionn Regan, Ace and Invisible, Statik, Tom Robinson, Jerry Dammers, Don Letts. More artists will be announced every week until the Carnival. There will also be an anti-racist carnival procession beforehand. Lineup and more details can be found by visiting www.lmhrcarnival.com.

Gemma Tumelty

NUS President Gemma Tumelty said: ""This year's LMHR Carnival will be an amazing and historic event to attend, but more importantly it will deal a massive blow to racism and the electoral hopes of the likes of the BNP. Everyone's heard about the famous original event where legends like The Clash and Steel Pulse rocked late 1970s fascists the National Front. Now our generation has the chance to create an anti-racist movement just as effective and lasting. Bring a coach or mini-bus down from your college, put on a pre-Carnival event at your Union to promote the cause, or volunteer to help out on the day! I'll be at Victoria Park on 27 April and I urge all students to do the same."

Would you like to be part of the LMHR Carnival 08? If so, LMHR are looking for the following:

  • Regional Coordinators to encourage people to come along from all over the country and organise transport to and from the carnival.
  • Promoters to help promote the event at universities nationwide. This may include organising a pre-carnival LMHR event.
  • Volunteers on the day and during the run up to the carnival

If this is something you would like more information about then please email info@lovemusichateracism.com, call 0207 801 2781 or visit www.lmhrcarnival.com.
