NUS response to Secretary of State's letter on funding changes

Gemma Tumelty, NUS National President said:

"We welcome the Government's emphasis on education in the Comprehensive Spending Review and DIUS' commitment to consult broadly on the proposed changes to spending commitments within the department's budget.

The sector will need to consider carefully the balance between bringing more people into higher education for the first time, and the capacity to respond to rapidly changing higher skills needs in the workforce. We live in an era of serial careers, particularly amongst highly skilled workers, and it would be a great shame if a change in funding arrangements were to limit the potential of those who have found a new direction, and wanted to support this by returning to higher education.

We look forward to examining the Government's proposals, and we will now consult with our members to ensure that students' views are considered in this matter."
