NUS Women's Campaign

Women's Officers - go to the Women's Campaign zone on officeronline

Pop Art Women's Campaign Poster

The NUS Women’s Campaign as we know it today has been fighting for women’s rights for nearly twenty years.

The campaign has a wide-reaching remit, and since the first Women’s Officer took office in 1987, we have worked on issues such as access to abortion, anti-racism, childcare, personal safety, reclaim feminism, healthcare, the welfare state, women’s rights worldwide, equal pay, rights at work, women in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, violence against women, sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, gender stereotyping, sweat-shops, free education, the war on Iraq, and so much more!

Building on our previous work and campaigns, the Women’s Committee has set three priority campaigns for 2006-2007: Pro-choice and Proud, Stop Violence Against Women, and Women and Work.

We are also supporting the NUS Priority Campaigns and will be working to ensure that the voices of women are a prominent feature in these campaigns.

Mark the National Pro-Choice Week of Action 23 October – 27 October

NUS and Abortion Rights joint Lobby of Parliament on 22 November 2006

Get your union some pro-choice policy

Stop violence against women

We will be working with organisations like Amnesty International to campaign for an end to violence against women. Actions for students' unions and students include:

The National Reclaim the Night March called by the London Feminist Network, in London on 25 November

Collect signatures for the national petition to the UK Government to get real about violence against women

Campus Reclaim the Night marches

Violence Against Women awareness raising events on campus (materials provided)

Marking V-Day with a performance of the Vagina Monologues

Women and Work

We’re launching this campaign in term two and we’re hoping that women’s officers are going to be keen to take some action! Actions include:

Holding a Women at Work stall outside Careers Fairs (materials will be on offer)

Petitioning for mandatory pay audits (to close the pay gap by a significant amount)

Booking a speaker from the NUS Women’s Campaign speaker tour: awesome women will be available to do talks on the situation for women at work today (details coming soon on officeronline's Women's Campaign zone)

NUS Women's Unit

NUS Women’s Unit is part of the Research and Policy Department at NUS and supports the work of the National Women’s Officer (NEC). The policy passed by delegates at the annual NUS Women’s Conference, and prioritised by the committee elected at Women’s Conference, determines the Women’s Unit’s work. The Unit works to combat sexism in all its forms and to ensure that women’s voices are heard and valued.

A major part of the Women’s Unit’s work involves advising women’s officers on their day-to-day work, defending them if they are under attack and helping them with the development of women’s groups and local women’s campaigns. The Unit produces materials for women’s officers to assist their campaigning and casework; such as posters, postcards, campaign packs. The Unit also ensures that NUS Women’s Campaign has an effective national voice; running national campaigns, working with key women’s organisations and lobbying parliament on women’s issues.

The Women’s Unit is staffed by:

Lizzie Magnusson, Women’s Research and Information Co-ordinator

NEC responsibility:

Kat Stark, National Women’s Officer
